The W6 Cityscape website (www.w6cityscape.com) is edited by Dr. Alex Reid, formerly Director General of the Royal Institute of British Architects. It develops and promotes public realm projects in Hammersmith’s W6 postcode area. Contact: Email: aalreid@gmail.com. Mobile: 07748 654008.

LARGE PROJECTS

Hammersmith Avenue. Mitigating the damaging impact of the Hammersmith A4 by introducing a reduced speed limit, pedestrian crossings, low noise road surface, and tree planting. Click here for project summary.

Hammersmith Place. Creating a fine new pedestrianised public square around St. Paul’s Church by abolishing the slip road from the A4 and the west side of the gyratory. The area is today devastated by nine lanes of traffic, which would be removed. Click here for project summary.

SMALLER PROJECTS

Beckett Wharf Park. The restoration of a very special riverside micro-park just downstream of Hammersmith Bridge. Click here for Beckett Wharf Park website.

Buff Crossings. The application of a non-slip buff surface to the heavily used pedestrian crossings between the Hammersmith underground stations. This will aid pedestrian navigation and safety.

Crocus Planting. The adoption of the Ruby Giant crocus as the W6 postcode flower, and its planting in green spaces. The bulbs have been planted at St. Paul’s Church, Ravenscourt Park, and Funivall Gardens.

Furnivall Hedge. Thickening the planting along the north side of Furnivall Gardens to screen the traffic from Furnivall Gardens, and muffle traffic noise

Illumination of notable buildings. Modern LED lighting enables buildings to be subtly illuminated at relatively low capital and running cost.

Railway Station soundscape. A soundscape created by a sound artist, based on the sounds that would have been heard in the station when it opened in 1868. To be played weekly.

Removal of two digital advertising signs. Two large digital advertising signs loom over the grounds of the Grade II listed St. Paul’s Church. We argue that they should be removed.

Talking Benches. The designation of some conversational Talking Benches across W6. The first is planned for Beckett Wharf Park.

COLLABORATION

The work of W6 Cityscape is complementary to that of the amenity organisations operating in the W6 postcode area, with whom we are happy to collaborate on specific projects. They are the Brackenbury Residents Association, Hammersmith Society, Hammersmith Mall Residents Association, Friends of Ravenscourt Park, Friends of Furnivall Gardens, Friends of Brook Green, Hammersmith Community Gardens Association, St. Peter’s Residents Association, and the Hammersmith Business Improvement District (BID).
